Dewitt Carolinas Breaks Ground on Jolly Roger Student Living Community At East Carolina University

Project brings 294 new units to accommodate 804 students by Fall 2021

October 3, 2019 – Greenville, NC –Dewitt Carolinas today broke ground on the Jolly Roger student living community at East Carolina University. The project will introduce 294 new units to accommodate up to 804 students and is projected to be complete in time for the Fall 2021 semester. Situated on Charles Blvd. at 14th Street, the 4.6-acre site is just a short walk from ECU’s main campus and the university’s athletic district. At seven stories, the Jolly Roger will offer one, two, three and four-bedroom units, a secured-access resident parking deck, a rooftop pool and first-class amenities, with safety and security a key consideration in building materials, site planning and property access. Among those officially breaking ground were Greenville Mayor P.J. Connelly, Dewitt Carolinas CEO Todd Saieed and President Everett Daniels, and representatives of Greenville’s WIMCO/TA Loving, the project’s general contractor.

“The Jolly Roger will be ECU’s premier student housing complex offering safety, sophistication and the perfect location for student housing” said Mr. Saieed. With easy access to the main campus, Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium and Greenville’s Uptown District, the Jolly Roger will fill an important need for ECU, bringing students within easy walking distance of both on- and off-campus activities. Luxury amenities will also distinguish the Jolly Roger. The only rooftop pool in the Greenville student housing market will be central to an amenity deck with multiple entertainment areas, including an outdoor screen for viewing movies and sporting events. A two-story fitness center, a multi-level game day lounge, a lite-fare café, wi-fi lounge for quiet study and private study rooms to accommodate group collaboration add to the project’s shared amenity package. Individual units will come furnished and feature stainless steel appliances, in-unit washer and dryer, and walk-in closets. Access to all units and shared community areas will be secured with key fob electronic locks. The metal framing and concrete construction is non-combustible and diminishes noise from floor to floor and unit to unit.

Named for the local landmark long located on the site, the developer displayed salvaged Jolly Roger signage at the groundbreaking which will be incorporated into the building’s interior. “The Jolly Roger will reflect the past while providing student housing that will undoubtedly contribute to ECU’s very bright future,” said Dewitt Carolinas President Everett Daniels, a graduate of ECU’s Department of Construction Management.

Other firms on the design team include Humphreys & Partners Architects, for building design and, in collaboration with Simmons Design, for interior design; Studio Outside for landscape architecture; Crenshaw Consulting Engineers, for the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems; ARC Engineering, for civil engineering; and Walker Consultants, for the parking deck engineering plan. Mr. Daniels offered that up to 50 percent of the building management and executive team will be comprised of ECU graduates, given the school’s top-rated construction management program.
